OpenAI Launches a Free Training Program to Get Small Businesses Using ChatGPT

OpenAI's new ChatGPT Small Business Program offers free webinars and training on using AI for accounting, marketing, and more. Here's what's in it.

OpenAI launched the ChatGPT Small Business Program on July 21, 2026, a free package of webinars, in-person training events, and partner integrations aimed squarely at getting small business owners using its tools for everyday operations.

What happened

The program bundles several pieces: webinars walking through how to use ChatGPT Work for accounting, marketing, e-commerce, and other day-to-day tasks; in-person “OpenAI Academy” events with guided instruction and peer support from other business owners; customer-story content and short instructional videos; and plugins, skills, and special offers from OpenAI’s partners.

It’s built around ChatGPT Work, an agentic product OpenAI introduced July 9 alongside its newest model, GPT-5.6 — described by the company as “our most advanced model available to businesses.” Unlike a standard chat session, ChatGPT Work can operate across a user’s apps and files over an extended period and produce finished output — spreadsheets, slides, documents, or web apps — rather than just answers. OpenAI says it has already reached 10 million ChatGPT Work and Codex users.

OpenAI framed the push around cost and accessibility: “Small businesses need enterprise-grade technology, but in a way that is accessible and affordable,” the company said in announcing the initiative. Its pitch to owners is that ChatGPT Work lets a lean team absorb tasks — bookkeeping support, marketing, customer service, compliance checks — that might otherwise require hiring a dedicated employee for each.

Why it matters

This lands the same week congressional testimony and industry surveys have shown small business AI adoption climbing fast (roughly three-quarters of small businesses now report using AI tools, according to recent House testimony), while owners also report growing anxiety about compliance costs and a patchwork of state AI rules. A free, structured training program from the company behind the most widely used consumer AI tool lowers the barrier to entry further — and it’s a clear signal OpenAI sees small business as a serious growth market, not just an afterthought of its enterprise sales motion.

What this means for small business owners

Free training is worth taking OpenAI up on if you’re already curious about using AI for repetitive back-office work — categorizing expenses, drafting client communications, or building first-pass reports. But approach any AI tool touching your financial data with the same scrutiny you’d apply to a new vendor: understand what data it can access, whether it’s storing or training on your business information, and where a human still needs to review the output before it goes to a client, a lender, or the IRS. AI can accelerate bookkeeping tasks; it doesn’t replace the judgment call of knowing which numbers actually belong on your books.

The bottom line

OpenAI is making a serious play for small business mindshare with free training and an increasingly capable agentic product. The tools are worth exploring — just keep a human in the loop on anything that touches your books or your tax filings.
